The Craft and Market Quarters

Our Craftsmen and Women

This is our craft quarter and market, which is the most varied area of our encampment with craftsmen and women practicing everything from carpentry, cooking, to even calligraphy. While armies at this time usually did not have a big camp following like that of their contemporary European counterparts, this situation changed whenever the army was encamped near a town or village. Soldiers and samurai are in need of all kinds of services and entertainment, and those with a skill ply their trade here.

Cooking (Ryōri - 料理)

An army on the march is almost always hungry, and the men need to be fed. However, a samurai with a little more money can always afford higher quality food and service than that found by the common ashigaru.

DISCLAIMER: We are not a licensed food preparation business and, therefore, the food we make is for the consumption of our group's members only and NOT the public.

Carpentry (Mokkō - 木工)

Carpenters are invaluable to the military. Whether it is making canteens, repairs, or even constructing sections of a castle or fortifications, carpenters will never be short of work when an army is in the area The art of Japanese carpentry is heavily reliant on fittings rather than nails due to the latter being comparatively expensive and the former allowing things to be easier packed down when on the move.

Armour Smithing
(Yoroi tan'ya - 鎧鍛冶)

It is not at all surprising that the service of an armour smith is crucial for an army, especially due to the fact that little detailed repairs seem to have been done in the field. Hammering out a dent may have been possible, but anything more detailed would have needed an armour smith.

Most ashigaru at this time were not very heavily armoured, or armoured at all. Those few that did have armour often had to rely on mass produced munition grade armour or pieces stolen from the slain in battle, samurai with money could afford higher quality commissions.
